Jigme Singye Wangchuck brief biography

Jigme Singye Wangchuck served as Bhutan's Fourth Dragon King. His father died in 1972 when the Crown Prince was only sixteen. At this tender age, Jigme Singye assumed the mantle of Bhutan's leadership. He focused his efforts on socio-economic development while preserving the nation's culture. He is credited with coining the term “Gross National Happiness” and adopting a system of governance that addresses comprehensive aspects of people's well-being instead of overly emphasizing the internationally accepted norm of Gross National Product.

It is an idea that has begun to catch on throughout the world with potentially profound implications for shared peace and well-being. In July 2011, the United Nations passed a resolution, placing "happiness" on the global development agenda. Many nations now use some version of measurement inspired by Bhutan's GNH experiment.
