Desmond Tutu
The retired Anglican bishop and South African social rights activist is shown here in an allegorical painting of the Rainbow Nation. The Rainbow Nation is a term he coined to describe post-apartheid South Africa. The jacaranda and mimosa trees are references to President Nelson Mandela who picked up on the rainbow nation theme by saying, "Each of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous jacaranda trees of Pretoria and the mimosa trees of the bushveld – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.."
